Questions We Get a Lot

Alpine skis are designed for groomed runs and variable downhill terrain — they're built for edge control and speed on a slope. Cross-country skis are built for distance and stride on flatter or rolling terrain, typically using a binding system that lets your heel lift with each step. Think about where you're actually skiing before you choose.

Ski length affects how a ski turns, absorbs terrain, and handles speed — shorter skis are generally easier to maneuver, longer skis track better at speed. Most manufacturers size by height and weight, and cross-country packages in particular will list a recommended skier weight range. When in doubt, lean toward the manufacturer's sizing guide over gut instinct.

The fit and construction of a purpose-built ski sock matters more than most people expect. A sock that bunches, slips, or traps moisture inside a ski boot creates pressure points and cold spots over a full day on the mountain. Merino and alpaca blends are worth it for their natural moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties across a long day of use.

About Our Skis

Skis are purpose-built tools, and the difference between the right pair and the wrong one is felt immediately — in how a turn initiates, how the ski tracks at speed, how your legs feel at the end of the day. The category breaks into a few distinct disciplines: downhill alpine skiing, cross-country or Nordic skiing, and water skiing, each with its own geometry, binding system, and intended terrain. Alpine setups are designed for descending, with stiff edges and a shape optimized for carving. Cross-country rigs prioritize stride efficiency and light weight for covering distance. Water skis are a different animal entirely — built for surface tension, spray, and tow-rope pull on open water. Whoever you are and wherever you ski, the variables that matter most are length relative to your size and ability, binding compatibility, and whether the ski's flex and construction match the conditions you're actually going out in. Get those right, and the gear stays out of your way so you can just ski.
